Breaking the ice with a stranger is sometimes less than easy. Particularly if you are a gregarious budgerigar and the other chap is an uncommunicative gibbon. But for Beau (the budgie) and Uban (the gibbon) there was a good reason to at least try to get along. After all they have to sleep under the same roof.
Both are “pets” of Peter Leeflang, overseer at Perth Zoo and his wife Yoka. They lead a rather pampered life.
But Mr Leeflang reckoned the chances of Beau and Uban developing a long-term friendship are slim.
Birds are a natural part of a gibbon’s diet and once Uban became a little older there’s a chance that he would consider Beau more as a tasty dish than a friend.
